For men, hair loss is often predictable. While a variety of things can cause hair to thin and fall out, the vast majority of male hair loss is caused by male pattern baldness. Formally called Androgenetic Alopecia, this condition is relatively harmless. But if you're thinking about doing something about your hair loss, it probably means it's been bothering you.
The Hard Facts
Male hair loss can begin as early as 21 years of age. By the time they reach the age of 50, 85% of American men are affected. Male Androgenetic Alopecia is the most common type of hair loss.
Why does it happen?
Blame it on genetics. Male pattern baldness is hereditary, so it's often not a surprise when a man starts losing his hair, especially at the temples and crown. Because other causes of hair loss do exist, like medications and stress, it's important to determine the cause of your hair loss before you move forward with a treatment plan.
Finding the cause is the key to finding your solution. Once hair loss begins, it's rare for it to stop progressing on its own. That's why it's so important to act sooner than later.
How does it happen?
Thinning hair and hair loss in male pattern baldness occurs due to a natural process. The body begins to convert the male hormone testosterone into a compound called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This DHT bonds to hair follicles, causing them to miniaturize. The affected hair shafts become finer, shorter, and lose pigmentation. The familiar "pattern" created in male pattern baldness is the result of hair follicles around the hairline and crown being especially sensitive to DHT. When male pattern baldness is treated early in the thinning phase, some of our treatment options can preserve miniaturized hair follicles and prevent them from dying – another good reason to take action quickly.
